In 2026 the flight is the place to save money, not the bed. Airline fares rose 23.4% in the 12 months to August 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Prices overall rose 3.4%, so flying got more expensive about seven times as fast as everything else.

Lodging went the other way. NerdWallet's travel price tracker found lodging down roughly 2.2% year over year in parts of 2026. Going.com says its members save an average of $550 per international ticket by using fare alerts. Its August 2026 guide gives two examples: a New York to Madrid round trip for $275 and Los Angeles to Shanghai for $313. Fares rose 2.7% in August alone. Checking by hand and waiting for a sale is therefore a slow way to pay more. The steps for finding the cheapest real fare on fixed dates are a separate exercise.

The obvious objection is that the $550 figure comes from a company that sells the alerts, and its headline deals are the best results, not the typical ones. Both points are fair. A skeptical reader could cut the number in half. Half of $550 is still $275, which pays for nearly four weeks of dorm beds in Southeast Asia at the $6 to $10 a night Going reports.

Frontier raised its first checked bag fee from $35 to $79 in 2026 and its second from $45 to $89, TravelPirates reports. The fee is lowest when the bag is added during booking ($40 to $75) and rises to $99 or more at the airport. Southwest ended free checked bags and now charges $45 for the first and $55 for the second.

European budget carriers work the same way. According to Wego, a Wizz Air base fare includes only one under-seat bag of 40 by 30 by 20 cm, and adding a trolley or checked bag can roughly double a fare like its $25 Budapest to Athens sample. Ryanair's free item is smaller still, at 40 by 20 by 25 cm. Nomad Lawyer puts the gate penalty for a bag that fails the sizer at €40 to €75. The rule follows directly: either pay for bags when booking or pack so everything fits the free bag.

Standard cards charge foreign transaction fees of 1% to 3% on every purchase, so a fee-free card is worth having. The bigger charge is dynamic currency conversion, where a terminal or ATM offers to bill in dollars. State Department guidance says this adds a 3% to 8% markup over the real exchange rate, and advises always paying in local currency. On $900 of card spending, that is $27 to $72 lost for pressing the wrong button.

One fee is not owed yet. The EU's €20 ETIAS authorization has no confirmed start date, and US and Canadian passport holders currently need to pay nothing. Websites selling approvals now are third parties.

The 2026 Eurail Global Pass cost €553 for 15 travel days within two months, with youth discounts of up to 20%. Whether it beats point-to-point tickets depends on the route, so it is worth pricing both ways for the actual itinerary before buying.

The widest gap has nothing to do with booking skill. Going puts Zurich at about $164 a day for budget travelers and Budapest at under $50. The best budget travel tip is to choose the cheaper city before booking anything, because the difference between destinations is larger than every other saving in this piece.
